Who was Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya?
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, often regarded as “the maker of modern Mysore”, was an Indian civil engineer, administrator, and statesman who served as the 19th Dewan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.
Considered one of the foremost civil engineers, Visvesvaraya’s birthday, falling on September 15 is celebrated as Engineers” Day not only in India but also in Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
Marked by an excellent educational journey Visvesvaraya completed his civil engineering degree from the College of Engineering, Pune, and went on to earn several scholarships, including the Government of India Scholarship, which further allowed him to pursue his studies in engineering at the University of Bombay.
Along with being credited for designing the Block System, his most notable contribution was in the field of irrigation and flood control, along with other remarkable projects including the Mysore Sandal Oil and Soap Factory, Mysore University, the Bank of Mysore, and the Bhadravati Iron and Steel Company, all of which are located in Mysore.
This visionary engineer earned numerous accolades not only in India but also globally and was also admired by his contemporary European counterparts for his abilities and singular achievements in the field.
Visvesvaraya, for his exceptional services to British India, was appointed CIE and later knighted KCIE, while for his services to the Kingdom of Mysore and the Republic of India, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the Government of India.
